from my world & studio
Announcing my first-ever solo gallery exhibition! Weeeeeeeeee! This is an exciting NEW body of work for me. After the chaos of the last couple years, I found myself drawn to home....to my roots. Revisiting the textures and feelings of growing up in the projects of South Boston and the things that truly light me up. This work was born. 42 Logan Way, South Boston, MA 02127 That's my home. It doesn't matter my age or where my mail is delivered. This brick apartment building in Southie will always be my home. Where my hall smelled like pee, where we burned our trash in incinerators, where my brother and I would have socks fights, and where my mom would pop over the rock-studded roof to yell at us to come home at night when the lights came on. (Tobbbi Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnn) I'm often asked what my paintings mean or what inspires them. Super common questions for artists, especially in the abstract realm. It dawned on me recently while I was in my studio staring up at the many works in progress on the wall. Where I sit is off my kitchen right next to a fireplace. The fireplace is red brick; just like my apartment. We've toyed with painting it white, but haven't for this nostalgic reason. I've always known I loved brick and concrete. Ripped things and graffiti marks. After all, it's what surrounded and made up my world from birth through early teens. But, what hit me on this day examining my mark-making, is that the same strokes and marks that come out of me were literally the same shapes shown on the brick right next to me. WAAAZOOOOOW!!!!! That felt really good. (it also solidified this brick is NEVER being painted). To know I'm zoned into what TRULY lights my fire. What zings me. I want to create from that place always. Walking down the streets of Southie to the T station to hop on the train downtown. Those textures, sights, smells. GRIT. That's what I'm aspiring to share in this new work. I hope you'll be able to join me at the gallery!I'm excited to share this work with you and to see it all in one space! Come out opening night, then bring friends and come back for the reception on 8/5! You won't regret it. See you soon! OPENING NIGHT - Friday 7/28, 5-8pm
