My name is Tobi Beck. I am an American visual artist based in Southern California. I paint intuitively and rely on raw honesty to release smudges of feelings into freedom. Born and raised in the projects of South Boston, the gritty textures of the city can be seen in my grungy marks, reminiscent of brick and ripped stickers on light poles - memories and a moodiness that inspires my abstract style.
You'll find my work to include monochromatic graphic paintings, mixed media, collage, and a digital medium with focus on layered geometric compositions . I feel & think a lot. Each painting begins with openness. Every roll, scrape, and stroke is an exhale. There is no plan but to listen, feel what's present, react to momentary choice, and let go. Inspired by my childhood, running the streets of Southie in the Old Harbor Projects of Boston, Massachusetts, the grunge style markings and moods of my abstracts draw from my favorite textures of city life: torn posters, ripped stickers on light poles, broken subway tiles.
